Industry insights

Oil and gas remains a cornerstone sector across the UAE and wider Gulf, spanning upstream production, midstream transport and storage, and downstream refining and processing. Valuation work in this sector covers an unusually wide asset spectrum — from wellheads and production equipment through pipelines and storage infrastructure to fully integrated refinery processing units — each carrying distinct risk, obsolescence, and market-evidence characteristics.

What makes oil & gas equipment valuation distinct

  • Harsh-environment depreciation. Corrosive, high-pressure, or extreme-temperature conditions accelerate physical depreciation, often offset by rigorous integrity management regimes.
  • Highly specialised, low-liquidity assets. Much upstream and downstream processing equipment is purpose-built with no meaningful secondary market — DRC is typically the only viable method.
  • Decommissioning and environmental liability considerations. These increasingly need to be factored into the net economic contribution of ageing assets nearing end-of-field-life.
  • Regulatory and commodity price sensitivity. Utilisation and economic obsolescence are tied to commodity price cycles and energy transition policy, requiring ongoing reassessment.
  • Support equipment with active markets. Rigs, compressors, and mobile production support equipment often have identifiable secondary markets — market comparable should be applied where genuine evidence exists.

Why a specialist valuer matters here

Oil and gas asset values are among the largest and most consequential in any industrial portfolio — errors in methodology carry outsized financial impact for lenders, insurers, joint venture partners, and regulators alike. This sector also frequently intersects with cross-border financing, joint venture disputes, and litigation contexts, where the rigour and defensibility of the valuation methodology matters as much as the final figure.
